Rara Lake Visit Guide

1. Introduction:
Rara Lake is the biggest and deepest freshwater lake in Nepal.  It lies in Rara National Park of Mugu district, Karnali Province of Nepal. It is at 2900m altitude and has 10.8 sq km area. Rara Lake is one of the most incredible and fascinating treks in the Himalayan range. Starting with a clean flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj city and then taking any other brief flight to Mugu Talcha airport. Trek to Rara Lake is a pleasant walk through the historical village, antique culture, and nature attribute. The fresh blue water of the lake will captivate you. Rara Lake is surrounded by Rara National Park. Rara Lake has many unique floral and faunal importance with the hosting of Rare and vulnerable species with precious herbs.  
In September 2007, it was declared a Ramsar site, covering 1,583 ha. including the surrounding wetland.

The essential features of Rara National Park are the breathtaking Rara Lake, various beautiful landscape sceneries of snow-capped mountains, pristine alpine forest, and chances to view various Rare birds and various Rare Himalayan animals.  You also get to explore the Western culture and tradition of Nepal. Rara Lake is the best trekking destination for a short holiday package. The best time to visit or go on the trek to the Lake is from March to June and September to November. From September to November, the birds migrate to Rara from different parts of the world. So, this season is very good for bird watching. Murma village is near Rara Lake and Murma Top is the viewpoint of Rara Lake. From the Murma top other district views also be seen if the weather is clear. It takes 3 hours from the lake.  

2. Travel Rara Lake (Mugu):

Mugu has an airport in Talcha around 2 hours away from Rara Lake. The regular flight from Nepalgunj to Talcha is operated by Tara Airlines and other airlines also fly in the busy season. The tentative flight time from Nepalgunj to Talcha Airport generally takes 35 to 45 minutes depending upon the weather condition. Mugu also has a road connection from Nepalgunj and Surkhet. It takes about 2 days to reach Mugu from Nepalgunj.

The headquarters of Mugu is Gamgadhi which is a 2.5-hour drive from Talcha Airport. A jeep is required to travel from Talcha to Gamgadhi which is available at the Talcha airport. For the travel to Rara Lake from Talch airport you have two options, first is walking through Bmimsen Dhunga which is a very historical place and the second is by jeep to reach to Milichaur and then need to walk 20 minutes to reach a Lake. 

Most of the villages in the Mugu district require walking on foot hence a walking stick might be required for those who do not have experience walking on the foot trails. Also, a trekking/sports shoe (mostly with rugged soles) and tracksuit-type clothes will be required during the travel. A water bottle should be always with the person as water source around the district is not available everywhere. Also, water purification is necessary as the water sources are not reliable and might cause diarrhea. Since most distances requires walking a bag pack is highly recommended to carry the personal belonging easily on the back.

3. Weather/Climate:

The temperature in Rara varies from -10 degrees to 20 degrees on average. The hottest is May and the coldest is December. However, May to June month has a mild temperature with a maximum of 25 degrees to a minimum of 10 degrees. Hence it is required to bring some warm clothes. During this period the Rara might experience some rain so a raincoat or umbrella or waterproof jacket will be better to bring with personal belongings.

4. Food:

Generally, food is not available on the way while traveling from one to another place. There is a long walking distance to reach from one to other villages and most of the local foods are only available. So, it is highly recommended to bring some dry fruits, noodles, and packet foods as required in the travel period. Native food varieties are available in the Rara Lake Hotel. There are three hotels available in Rara 2 hotels are near the Lake and one is a homestay 1 hour from the lake on the way to Khatyad Rural Municipality.

5. Accommodation and Personal Hygiene:

Since traveling it requires staying at night in the village and there would not be adequate accommodation facilities. So, it is highly recommended to take toiletries (tissue paper, soap, toothpaste, etc.) with them. Rara Lake's hotel has a good accommodation facility. Single and family Tents are available in the hotel space.   

6. First aid medicine:

In order to travel to Rara Lake, first aid medicine may be required due to the unavailability of the medicine shops and health posts on the way. So, it is highly recommended to bring first aid medicine for fever, cold, diarrhea crape bandages, pain relievers, and other medicines depending on personal health condition. It will be better if you bring a kneecap for long walking travel.
